From hopeful rookies to global icons, one song for every year since debut.
BTS has officially turned 12! On June 13, 2013, Bangtan Sonyeondan made their debut, and the rest is history. From struggles to breaking global records, the seven-member group has built a legacy beyond music. Through relatable lyrics, powerful storytelling, and unwavering passion, BTS has made a place in fans' hearts.
Back in 2022, the boys had to take a short break from group activities to fulfill their mandatory military service. Now, with six members already discharged and SUGA set to return in just a few days, the reunion is closer than ever. It is surely a memorable year for the band and their ARMY.
In celebration of their 12th anniversary, we’re revisiting their journey through one group song from each year. From doubt, dreams, learning, and loving yourself, their music has shifted with time. These 12 tracks capture how far they have come and why people connect so deeply with their story.
“No More Dream” (2 Cool 4 Skool) – 2013
Of course, we have to begin with the one that started it all. It set the tone for their rebellious, youthful yet passionate spirit from day one. They put up a fight against the system with their powerful lyrics and asked everyone, “What’s your dream?”
“Danger” (Dark & Wild) – 2014
From the fight against the system, the group moved to dealing with confusion and resentment in relationships. This track captures the frustration of feeling unseen and unheard. Its high-powered beats are matched by equally intense choreography. You can’t help but move along with the tune.
“I Need U” (The Most Beautiful Moment in Life) – 2015
A song that holds deep meaning for many fans, this marked the beginning of the iconic ‘HYYH’ era. The era that started one of the most twisted, heartbreaking, yet gripping tales. It tells the story of youth, heartbreak, transition, and pain. While the lyrics talk about a fading love, the music video portrays the struggle and pain of growing up.
“Blood Sweat & Tears” (WINGS) – 2016
One of the most iconic songs in BTS’ discography, this track dives deep into themes like temptation, desire, sacrifice, getting sucked down the evil path and self-discovery. It’s about getting lost, making mistakes, and still finding the strength to keep going. Even if our wings break along the way, there is no stopping.
“Spring Day” (You Never Walk Alone) – 2017
“Bogo shipda...” Just those two words are enough to evoke so many emotions. The pain of missing someone and the quiet ache of longing, all expressed with such sincerity and beauty. The metaphor of spring finally arriving after a long winter perfectly captures the essence of a long wait finally ending. It has a layer of warmth and hope. A soulful track that can easily move you to tears.
“Idol” (Love Yourself: Answer) – 2018
The boys are proud of how far they’ve come, they’ve finally learned to love themselves. “I’m never gonna change, I’m never gonna trade” sums up the message perfectly. They’ve embraced who they truly are, and even with the constant pressure and expectations that come with being global icons, they refuse to lose themselves.
“Boy With Luv (ft. Halsey)” (Map Of The Soul: Persona) – 2019
A celebration of love, comfort, and connection, this song is joyful and full of fun. Just like its Korean title, “A Poem for Small Things,” it’s about cherishing the little details that are often missed: how someone walks, talks, and all the small habits that make them who they are. It’s a sweet reminder that love often lives in the quietest moments.
“Life Goes On” (BE) – 2020
When the world came to a standstill and uncertainty filled the air, BTS released this comforting track. They, too, felt stuck and disappointed, but reminded us all that no matter what happens, life goes on. Released during the pandemic, this song became a quiet source of hope for many. It was comfort in the form of music.
"Permission to Dance" (Butter CD) – 2021
The track itself is an ode to letting go and allowing yourself to feel good. It's dedicated to anyone having a tough day, offering comfort in the midst of darkness. With its bright melody and hopeful lyrics, “Permission to Dance” reminds us that it’s okay to pause, breathe, and find joy even in difficult times.
“Yet To Come” (PROOF) – 2022
We realise just how far they’ve come as the boys reflect on their past selves, their journey so far, and everything that still lies ahead. This song was released before BTS announced their military enlistment. It was like their way of reassuring ARMYs that, while there may be a short pause, the best moments are yet to come.
“Take Two” (Single) – 2023
BTS' gift to their fans. Released during Chapter 2, which is of solo activities and military service, this song is filled with love and longing. It feels like a personal letter with the members asking, 'Will you stay?' They express their desire to forever be with the ARMY and make a promise to return soon.
Since there were no group songs in 2024, and none so far in 2025, it all makes their future look even more exciting. You never know what's going to come next. 2026 is going to be truly special. With all seven members finally together again soon, it will be a full-circle moment, and one that holds deep meaning for both BTS and ARMY.
(It was difficult to choose just one song from each year, but I tried.) What one song will you choose from each year to define BTS' journey? Do share in the comments!
